Many people visit the city for its history and its interesting buildings. It is a place where old traditions meet new ways of working.

The city has a very long story. People lived in this area 300,000 to 400,000 years ago. These early people were known as Homo erectus and Neanderthals. The town we know today began around an abbey built in 974. This abbey was started by Gero, the Archbishop of Cologne. The name comes from a small brook called the Gladbach. Most of this brook runs underground now.

Names for the city have changed over time. It was once just called Gladbach. In 1888, it became Mönchengladbach to show it was near a monk's abbey. This helped people tell it apart from another town. Between 1933 and 1950, the spelling was slightly different. In 1950, the name was changed again to avoid confusion with the city of Munich.

Work in the city has changed a lot. From the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s, many people worked in the textile industry. This means they made cloth and clothing. Today, only about 7 percent of workers stay in that industry. Now, people work in many other fields like machines, health, and art. The Santander Consumer Bank is a very large employer in the city center.
