The Krasue is a famous nocturnal spirit from Southeast Asian folklore. It is described as the floating head of a woman. Usually, she is shown as young and beautiful. Her internal organs, like her heart and stomach, hang from her neck. These organs trail behind her as she flies through the night. Some people say she has a soft, glowing light around her. This glow might look like a small, floating fire.

Many different cultures have stories about spirits like this. In Cambodia, people call this spirit the Ahp. In Laos, it is known as the Kasu. Indonesia has several names for it, such as the Kuyang or Leyak. The Philippines has the manananggal, which is a spirit that haunts pregnant women. Even Japanese folklore has creatures called nukekubi that are quite similar. These stories show how many people across the region share these ideas.

People have many different ideas about how the Krasue began. In Thailand, some believe it is a curse from past sins. Other legends say a woman tried to use black magic. She may have used a wrong spell that caused her head to separate. One story tells of a Khmer princess who used a spell to save her head and organs. Another tradition says a rich woman was possessed by an evil spirit. These stories help explain why the spirit exists in the first place.

Because the Krasue is always hungry, she looks for food in the dark. She might seek out raw meat or even farm animals like cattle. Some stories say she might look for blood or other things. To stay safe, villagers use clever tricks. They grow spiky bamboo or thorny branches around their homes. The Krasue is afraid of thorns because they might catch her organs. People also avoid leaving clothes outside at night to keep them clean.

In modern times, some people claim to have seen the Krasue. In 2008, a factory owner in Thailand saw a glowing shape on a camera. She thought it looked like an elderly woman with white hair. An expert looked at the video but thought it was just a light reflection. In 2014, many teenagers went to Ayutthaya to see floating red lights. The landowner said the lights were just lanterns used to scare birds. These sightings show how these old legends still live in people's minds today.
