The Kuntilanak is a famous spirit from Southeast Asian folklore.

In Indonesia, people call her the Kuntilanak. In Malaysia, she is known as the Pontianak. Many stories say she is the spirit of a woman who died during childbirth.

She is often described as a woman wearing a long white dress. She might have very long black hair and pale skin. Some tales say she has red eyes or sharp fangs. These stories are a big part of the culture in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

There are many ways people say the spirit shows herself.

Folklore says she often appears under a full moon. Some people say you can hear her by listening for a baby crying. You might also hear a woman laughing. If the sound is loud, the spirit is far away. If the sound is quiet, she is very close.

Some stories say a dog whining means she is near. Others say you might smell a sweet plumeria flower. This smell might be followed by a bad scent.

In different regions, the stories change a little bit.

In Malaysia, some people believe she acts like a vampire. They say she seeks out men or pregnant women. In Indonesia, some stories say she takes the form of a bird. This bird makes a "Ke-ke-ke" sound while it flies. Some people believe she hides in banana trees during the day.

There is even a story about how to stop her. It says driving a nail into the nape of her neck can turn her into a normal woman.

These legends are tied to real places and history.

The city of Pontianak in Kalimantan, Indonesia, takes its name from this myth. Legend says the area was once full of ghosts. A leader named Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie used cannon fire to drive them away. He then built a palace and a mosque on that site.

Today, people in that region sometimes fire bamboo cannons to honor him. This shows how old stories can shape the names of real cities.

Because these stories are so famous, they appear in many movies.

Many horror films about the Pontianak were made in the 1950s and 1960s. An actress named Maria Menado played the spirit in several early films. These movies became very popular in Malaysia.

Even today, filmmakers in Indonesia and Malaysia make new movies about her. You can also find her in video games and even in digital characters. These stories continue to be told in many different ways.
