These creatures are known as yōkai, which are types of spirits or monsters. They are said to live in the rivers and ponds found throughout Japan. For many people, the kappa is a very important part of local stories. Some even view them as sacred beings. In some areas, they are treated as water deities known as suijin.

A kappa usually looks like a small, human-like creature. Most accounts say they are green and have slimy or scaly skin. They often have webbed hands and feet to help them swim. Many descriptions include a turtle-like shell on their backs. A very important feature is a small depression on their head called a dish. This dish must stay filled with water.

If the water spills or dries up, the kappa becomes very weak. Some stories even say they have a beak-like mouth or look like frogs.

The stories about kappa have changed over a long time. In the past, they were often seen as dangerous. People believed they could drown humans or pull horses and cattle into the water. Later, the stories became more about mischief. Some tales show them as silly beings that can be caught or punished. If a kappa is forgiven, it might perform hard work or share a secret medicine recipe. They are also known to love eating cucumbers and playing sumo wrestling.

There are many different names for the kappa across Japan. In some regions, they are called names that mean "river child." In other places, they are called names that sound like monkeys or apes. Some people even call them names that mean "soft-shell turtle" because they look so much like them. In the Kyūshū region, a legend tells of a kappa boss named Kusenbō. He was said to lead 9,000 other kappa in the rivers.
