Kolyma Mountains

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Kolyma Mountains are in northeastern Siberia. Most of them sit in the Magadan Oblast. They are near the Sea of Okhotsk. This range is a very big place. It has many ridges and flat areas called plateaus. It also has peaks made of granite. These peaks are often between 1,000 and 2,000 meters tall. The highest point is Mount Nevskaya. It is in the Omsukchan Range.

The mountains act like a divide for water. They split the land into two parts. One part flows to the Kolyma River. The other part flows to the Sea of Okhotsk. Many rivers start on the northern slopes. These include the Bakhapcha and the Omolon rivers. Rivers on the southern slopes are shorter. The Ola and Yama rivers flow to the sea.

There are many smaller mountain groups here. Most are in the Magadan Oblast. These include the Korkodon and Kongin ranges. Some parts are far to the north. These sit in the Chukotka area. The Kuryin Range is one of them. The mountains are a vast and wild land.
