Kitwe is a very important city in Zambia. It sits inside the Copperbelt Province. It is the second largest city in the country by size and population. Some people even call the city Kitwe-Nkana. This name comes from Senior Chief Nkana of the Lamba people.

Much of the city's work comes from the ground. Kitwe has rich deposits of copper, cobalt, and emeralds. There are many mines on the north-western and western edges of the city. One very famous place is the Nkana Cobalt Plant. This is one of the largest mines in all of Africa. It sits just 1 km southwest of the city center. The Nkana cobalt mine is also the deepest mine in the Copperbelt. It has two shafts that go down more than 1,300 meters.

Kitwe began to grow a long time ago. It was founded in 1936 during the building of a railway. At first, it was just a small place to support the copper mines at Nkana. The railway reached the town in 1937. This line helped people travel to places like Bulawayo and Cape Town. Later, a branch line connected to the Atlantic port of Lobito in Angola. This helped move copper out of the country. In the 1950s, copper prices went up very high. This helped Kitwe grow from a small town into a big city. It officially became a city in 1966.

Learning is a big part of life in Kitwe. There are many different schools for children to attend. Some are private schools, like the Lechwe School or Kitwe International School. Others are public schools, such as Mpelembe Secondary School. Mpelembe is one of the top five best schools in Zambia. There are also many partnerships between schools in Kitwe and the UK.

The city is also home to the Copperbelt University. This is a large school with over 11,000 students. It is the second highest learning institution in the whole country.

Getting around Kitwe is quite easy for travelers. A major highway called the T3 runs through the city. It connects Kitwe to Ndola in the southeast and Chingola in the northwest. There are also roads that lead to Kalulushi and Mufulira. The railway is another way to move around the region. Trains carry passengers from places like Lusaka and Livingstone. While there is a local airport called Southdowns, most people use Ndola Airport. That airport is 50 km away and handles regular flights to many cities.
