The name comes from two words. "Katha" means story or a traditional tale. "Kali" means a performance or a play. Together, they tell a story through movement. These plays often show the eternal fight between good and evil.

Performers use music, singing, and hand gestures to share ideas. They even use movements from ancient South Indian martial arts. This makes the dance very powerful and athletic.

Preparing for a show is a big job.

It can take several hours just to get ready. Dancers wear very large and elaborate costumes. They also wear special headgear called kireetam.

The makeup is very important for the story. There are seven basic makeup types. For example, Pachcha uses green paint for noble heroes like Rama. Thaadi uses red for characters with an evil streak. Kari uses black for forest dwellers or hunters. Minukku uses yellow or orange for virtuous women.

Kathakali has a long and interesting history. Some say its roots are 1,500 years old. It became its own special style during the 16th and 17th centuries. It grew from older arts like Krishnanattam. This was a dance-drama about the god Krishna. A ruler named Kottarakkara Thampuran helped create a new style called Ramanattam. This was based on the epic story of the Ramayana. Over time, Ramanattam grew and became the Kathakali we see today.

Many old rules guide these performances. Much of this comes from an ancient text called the Natya Shastra. This text was written by a sage named Bharata. It was put together between 200 BC and 200 AD. The text has about 6,000 verses in 36 chapters. It teaches about expressions, gestures, and even how to stand.

Kathakali also uses the "navarasas," which are nine different facial expressions. These help the dancers show deep feelings to the crowd.

In the past, plays were very long. They would start at dusk and go until the sun came up.

Dancers performed near a large oil lamp called a Kalivilakku. This lamp used coconut oil to make a bright yellow light. This light helped the audience see the dancers' faces at night. Today, performances are usually shorter. While most dancers were traditionally men, women now perform in Kathakali too. It remains a beautiful way to share old legends.
