Kathakali is a highly complex form of Indian classical dance and theatre.

It is native to the Malayalam-speaking state of Kerala in southwestern India. The name is derived from two Sanskrit words. "Katha" means a story or traditional tale. "Kali" means a performance or a play. Together, the name describes a play of verses. This art form symbolizes the eternal struggle between good and evil.

It is a synthesis of music, vocal performances, choreography, and physical gestures. Unlike many other classical Indian dances, Kathakali incorporates movements from ancient South Indian martial arts and athletic traditions.

A Kathakali performance is structured around plays called Attakatha, which means "enacted story."

These texts are written in Sanskritized Malayalam. They use a specific format to separate action from dialogue. The Sloka part consists of metrical verses written in the third person. These verses describe the choreography and action. The Pada part contains the dialogue. This structure allows the actor-dancers significant flexibility to improvise during a performance. Traditionally, these stories come from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, or from the Puranas.

The technical elements of the dance are guided by ancient principles. Much of the theory comes from the Natya Shastra, a text attributed to the sage Bharata. This text was compiled between 200 BC and 200 AD. It contains about 6,000 verses organized into 36 chapters. The Natya Shastra describes the theory of rasa, or expression, and bhava, or emotion. It also details gestures, acting techniques, and basic standing postures.

Kathakali performers use the navarasas, which are nine distinct facial expressions, to communicate deep meaning to the audience.

Kathakali has a deep history connected to older theatrical traditions. It is closely related to Koodiyattam, which is considered one of the oldest continuously performed theatre forms in the world.

Some scholars believe the roots of Kathakali are as old as 1,500 years. The style we recognize today emerged as a distinct genre during the 16th and 17th centuries. It grew from forms like Krishnanattam, a dance-drama about the god Krishna. Legend says that when a request for a Krishnanattam troupe was denied, Kottarakkara Thampuran created Ramanattam. This new form was based on the Ramayana and eventually evolved into Kathakali.

The visual aspect of Kathakali is famous for its elaborate costumes and makeup.

Preparing a troupe can take several hours each evening. The makeup follows a strict code to identify character types. There are seven basic makeup styles used by the artists. Pachcha, or green, is used for noble characters and sages like Vishnu or Rama. Thaadi, or red beard, represents characters with an evil streak. Kari, or black, is used for forest dwellers and hunters. Minukku uses yellow or orange to portray virtuous feminine characters.

Other types include Kathi, which shows a heroic warrior with an evil inner nature, and Vella Thadi, which represents divine beings like Hanuman.

Performances have traditionally been long and demanding events. In the past, a play might start at dusk and continue all the way through dawn.

Dancers often performed in open grounds or in special temple theatres called Kuttampalam. A central part of the stage is the Kalivilakku, a large lamp fueled by coconut oil. This lamp provides a bright yellow light that helps the audience see the dancers' expressions at night. While traditional roles were played by men, modern troupes now include women. Modern performances are also generally shorter than the all-night shows of the past.

Kathakali connects deeply to Indian philosophy and social structures. The character types are often linked to the Guṇa theory from the Samkhya school of Hindu philosophy. This theory describes three qualities present in all beings: goodness, passion, and darkness. The makeup and movements reflect the proportions of these qualities within a character. By combining martial arts, complex literature, and philosophical symbolism, Kathakali serves as a powerful method of expressing spiritual ideas and virtues through art.
