Chakyar was born on February 15, 1899, in Thiruvangayoor. His father was Vishnu Sarma and his mother was Savithri Illotamma. He grew up in the Mani family of Chakyars. For hundreds of years, his family protected these art forms. He learned everything from his uncles. They were great masters named Mani Parameswara, Mani Neelakandha, and Mani Narayana Chakyar. He had his first big performance at age 14. It was at the Trikkaikkunnu Temple in Malabar.

For many years, these arts were only performed inside temples. Chakyar changed this by bringing them to the whole world. In 1949, he performed Chakyar Koothu on All India Radio. In 1962, he performed Koodiyattam in Madras. This was the first time it was performed outside of Kerala. He also traveled to New Delhi and Varanasi. Even the President of India, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, invited him to perform.

He won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1964.

Chakyar was a very important teacher for many people. He taught students who were not from the Chakyar community. He even taught a student named Maria Christopher Byrski from Poland. Other researchers came from far away to study with him. He wrote a huge book called Nātyakalpadrumam about Koodiyattam. This book is like an encyclopedia for the art form. He also helped teach students at the Kerala Kalamandalam school. His life helped keep these ancient traditions alive for everyone.
