He is known as the Pitamaha of Carnatic music. This word means "grandsire" or grandfather. He helped shape the way this classical music is played and taught. Many people believe he was an incarnation of Narada, a celestial singer. His music is filled with devotion and deep meaning. He wanted to make spiritual ideas easy for everyone to understand. He did this through beautiful and simple songs.

He created a special way to teach music to students. He organized lessons into graded steps called Svaravalis and Alankaras. These help learners build their skills one step at a time. He also chose a specific musical scale for beginners. This scale is called Mayamalavagowla. Even today, students start their music journey with this same scale. He also wrote Gitas, which are simple songs for new students. His teaching methods are still used by musicians everywhere.

Long ago, Purandara Dasa was a very wealthy merchant. He dealt in gold, silver, and many different types of jewelry. He was so rich that people called him Navakoti Narayana. This name meant he was worth ninety million. A famous legend says a miraculous event changed his life. A poor man asked his wife for help with a ceremony. She gave away a precious nose ring to help. Later, the ring mysteriously reappeared, showing the power of God. This event led him to give away all his riches.

Historians have different ideas about when he was born. Some say he was born in 1470 in a place called Araga. This is in the modern Shivamogga District of Karnataka. A committee in 2018 suggested Tirthahalli as his likely birthplace. He lived during the Vijayanagara Empire. He met a famous singer named Annamacharya around the year 1500. They sang together at the Tirumala temple. Purandara Dasa died on January 2, 1564, at the age of 95. He spent his later years in Hampi.

His music connects the spiritual world to everyday life. Most of his songs are in the Kannada language. Some of his songs are also in Sanskrit. He signed his works with the pen name Purandara Vittala. This name uses a different name for the deity Vishnu. He used words from daily life in his lyrics. This helped common people learn and sing his songs. He is a bridge between simple folk music and formal classical music. His songs are still sung with great pride today.
