Tyagaraja was a legendary composer of Carnatic music, which is a classical music style from India. He is known as one of the Trinity of Carnatic Music, alongside his friends Syama Sastri and Muthuswami Dikshitar. Tyagaraja used music as a way to feel close to the divine. Most of his songs, called kritis, were written to praise the god Rama. He also wrote musical plays in the Telugu language. One of these was a short play called Nauka Charitam.

Creating his music involved both skill and deep feeling. He focused on bhava, which means the expression of a song. He even introduced a new idea called sangati into his compositions. This was a big change for Carnatic music. He wrote his very first song, "Namo Namo Raghavaaya," in Sanskrit. He actually carved those words onto the walls of his house. He also wrote songs for temple festivals and daily life.

He lived during the time of four different kings in Thanjavur. One king, Serfoji II, even sent him gifts to join the royal court. Tyagaraja said no to the king's invitation. He did not want a court job to limit his creativity. He preferred a simple life spent in devotion. He taught music to many students during his life. Some of these students saved his songs on palm leaves and copper plates.

They often sing the Pañcaratna Kṛti, which means the "five gems." These five special songs are performed by large groups of musicians. His legacy is so big that a crater on Mercury is named Tyagaraja. His life has also been shown in many films.
