The region is famous for many important ancient cities. Jerusalem sits right in the middle of the land. Other major cities include Bethlehem, Jericho, and Hebron.

The land in Judea changes a lot depending on where you stand. In the western hills, the weather is much wetter. This area has a Mediterranean climate with more rainfall.

As you move toward the east, the land becomes much drier. This happens because of something called a rain shadow. The eastern part is known as the Judaean Desert. The ground here drops down in steps toward the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is very low and sits below sea level. The landscape can be very high or very low.

History tells us that many different groups lived here. The Bible tells stories of people like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They lived in these hills and the nearby Negev.

Later, the Israelite tribes lived in much of this land. They formed a kingdom with kings like Saul, David, and Solomon. Archeologists have found many things that match these old stories. These findings help us understand how people lived in the past. The land has seen many changes under different rulers.

Different leaders have controlled Judea throughout the years. The Hasmoneans and the Herodians ruled here at different times.

Later, the Romans took control of the area. After a revolt called the Bar Kokhba revolt, the Romans changed the name. They called the province Syria Palaestina. The name Judea was also used by English speakers in the past. Today, different people use different names for the same area. The name someone uses often shows their political views.

You can still see signs of the past in the landscape. The hills have many old stone terraces on their slopes.

These were made a long time ago for farming. People used the land to grow crops and raise sheep. Even today, shepherds move their animals across the hills. They move them to different spots as the seasons change. This way of using the land has lasted for centuries. It connects the modern world to the ancient past.
