It sits near the coast of the Mediterranean Sea but does not touch it. To the east, the land is bordered by Jordan and the Dead Sea. To the north, west, and south, it is bordered by Israel.

The name comes from its location on the western side of the Jordan River. It is one of two Palestinian territories, along with the Gaza Strip. This area is a very important part of the State of Palestine.

Control of the land is split into different levels of authority. In the mid-1990s, the Oslo Accords created three specific regional areas. Area A is managed by the Palestinian National Authority (PNA). Area B is shared by both the PNA and Israel. Area C makes up 60% of the West Bank and is managed by Israel.

Within these areas, the PNA manages 165 different Palestinian enclaves. This system of shared and separate control is a key part of how the region works today.

The history of this place has changed many times over the years. From 1517 to 1917, the area was part of Ottoman Syria under Turkish rule. After World War I, the United Kingdom managed the land under a British Mandate. Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Jordan occupied and then annexed the territory.

Jordan ruled the West Bank until the Six-Day War in 1967. At that time, Israel captured the territory and has administered it since then.

Many different people live in the West Bank today. There are about 2,747,943 Palestinians living in the territory. There are also more than 670,000 Israeli settlers living there.

About 220,000 of these settlers live in East Jerusalem. Area C contains 230 Israeli settlements where Israeli law is applied. The international community and the International Court of Justice have many different views on the legality of these settlements and the occupation.

The West Bank is a central part of a long conflict. Palestinians see this land as the heart of their future state. On the other hand, many Israelis see it as an ancestral homeland.
