Judaean Mountains

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Judaean Mountains are a famous range of hills. They sit in Israel and the West Bank. This range includes the Jerusalem Hills in the north. It also includes the Hebron Hills in the south. Many important cities are found here. You can visit Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Hebron. These mountains are part of a much longer range. This long chain of hills runs north to south.

The land here has a very interesting shape. To the west, the hills slope down toward the coastal plain. This descent goes through a low area of chalk. It then moves into the soft, rolling hills called the Shephelah. To the east, the land falls very steeply. It drops down toward the Jordan Rift Valley. The mountains are mostly made of hard limestone rock. They also have a red soil called terra rossa.

These mountains have a very long history. They were the heartland of the Kingdom of Judah. This kingdom existed from 930 BCE to 586 BCE. This is where the earliest Jewish settlements began. The Hebrew Bible tells many stories about this land. It describes the boundaries of the Tribe of Judah. The book of Joshua even names cities in these hills.

Long ago, the mountains looked very different. They were covered in thick forests. Many large animals lived in the area too. You might have found elephants or rhinoceroses there. Giraffes and wild water buffalo also lived here. Today, you can still find fossils of these ancient creatures. You can also visit special caves. The stalactite cave in Nahal Sorek National Park is one example.

People still use this land in special ways. Winemaking has happened here for thousands of years. Ancient people used winepresses to make wine. Making wine stopped for a long time in the past. However, people started making wine here again in the 1980s. Today, the area is famous for its boutique wineries. You can also travel through the hills easily. A fast train uses tunnels and bridges to move people. This train can go 160 km/h.
