geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Judaean Mountains are a large range of hills. They sit in Israel and the West Bank. Many famous cities are here. You can find Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Hebron in these mountains. The hills are part of a longer range. This range runs from north to south.

The mountains are made of hard limestone rock. They have red soil called terra rossa. Long ago, these hills had many forests. Today, you can find caves here. Some caves have stalactites. These are stone shapes that hang from the ceiling. In the past, many animals lived here. You might have seen elephants or giraffes. Now, those animals are gone.

People have lived here for a very long time. The mountains were the heart of the Kingdom of Judah. People also make wine in this area. They grow grapes in the red soil. They use the high hills to make good wine. New wineries are very popular today. You can travel through the hills by car or train. A fast train uses tunnels and bridges to move people through the mountains.
