He was known for being a very fast and agile shot-stopper. Many people believed he was one of the best in the world during his prime. He won the IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper award three times. Fans often called him "El Buldog," which means "The Bulldog." He even wore a cartoon bulldog on his goalkeeper jersey to show his personality. He was a strong leader who captained the Paraguay national team in two World Cups.

Chilavert was different from most goalies because he could score goals. Most goalkeepers stay near their net to defend. However, Chilavert was a specialist at taking free kicks and penalties. He worked very hard to improve this skill. He often stayed behind after training to practice 80 to 120 free kicks. This hard work helped him score 67 goals during his professional career. He is the second-highest goalscoring goalkeeper of all time. He was also one of only three goalkeepers to score a hat-trick, which means scoring three goals in one match.

His journey began in a poor family in Luque, Paraguay.

As a young boy, he had many responsibilities. At age five, he helped milk cows and sell the milk. He even walked barefoot until he was seven years old. He started his professional career with Sportivo Luqueño. Later, he played for many famous clubs. These included Real Zaragoza in Spain and Vélez Sarsfield in Argentina. He also played for San Lorenzo de Almagro and Peñarol.

Chilavert had many big moments on the field. In 1994, he helped Vélez Sarsfield win the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup. He played 74 times for the Paraguay national team between 1989 and 2003. During the 1998 World Cup, he became the first goalkeeper to take a direct free kick in the finals. He also helped Paraguay reach the round of sixteen in that tournament. He was named to the FIFA World Cup Team of the Tournament in 1998. Even though he was a star, he sometimes had a fiery temper that led to trouble.

Life after soccer has been just as busy for Chilavert. He retired permanently in 2004 after a farewell match where he scored a goal. He has worked as a commentator for television during the FIFA World Cup. He has also been involved in politics. In the 2023 general election, he ran for president of Paraguay. He ran under the Party of the Youth. His life shows how a person can go from a small town to the biggest stages in the world.
