Most of these flags were black. Many used a skull and crossbones design. This symbol became very common during the 1720s. Some pirates used different designs. For example, Francis Spriggs used a white skeleton. His flag showed a skeleton holding a dart and an hourglass.

Pirates used flags to send signals at sea. They did not fly the Jolly Roger all the time. They often used a false flag to get close to other ships. This helped them get within range to attack. When they were ready, they would raise the Jolly Roger.

A black flag was a signal for mercy. It meant a ship could surrender its goods. If the ship surrendered, the pirates would show quarter. This means they would show mercy to the crew.

Pirates also used a red flag. This was called a bloody flag. It signaled that no mercy would be shown. The pirates would take everything by force. This was a very serious signal for other sailors.
