A privateer was a person who used a ship to attack others at sea.

During wars, kings and queens gave them a special paper. This paper was called a commission. It let them hunt enemy ships.

This was different from being a pirate. A pirate steals without permission. A privateer has legal permission from a ruler.

Privateers helped leaders grow their navies. It was a cheap way for a country to get more ships. The people on the ships could get very rich. They did not get a set wage. Instead, they took a share of the money from captured ships. These ships were called prizes.

Sometimes, the line between a privateer and a pirate was blurry. If a war ended, some privateers kept attacking. These people could be arrested for piracy. Over time, things changed. Modern warships became faster and better. In 1856, many countries agreed to stop privateering. Now, only official navies control the seas.
