The Jolly Roger is a famous name for pirate flags.

Most of these flags were black. They often showed a human skull, which some called a "Death's Head." This design became very popular during the 1720s. Pirates used these flags to tell other ships who they were. It was a way to communicate on the open sea. This helped other sailors decide how to react to the pirate ship.

Flags were used as important signals during an attack. Pirates did not fly the Jolly Roger all the time. They often used a false flag to get close to a target. This allowed them to get within firing range without being noticed. Once they were close, they would raise their real flag. They might also fire a warning shot at the same time. This told the other ship that the pirates were ready.

There were different rules for different colored flags. A black flag was a signal for mercy. It meant that "quarter" would be given to the crew. If a ship surrendered its goods, the pirates would show mercy. To signal surrender, a ship had to "strike its flag." This meant taking down its own flag to show it gave up.

Pirates also used a red flag, sometimes called a "bloody flag." This was a very serious signal for other sailors. It meant that "no quarter" would be given to anyone. The pirates would take the cargo by force. In this case, no mercy would be shown to the people on the target ship. Some captains would wait for the enemy to fire shots before attacking.

History shows that many different designs existed. Captain Francis Spriggs used a white skeleton with a dart and an hourglass.

Another captain, Bartholomew Roberts, used a black flag in 1721. The term "Jolly Roger" appears in a book from 1724 by Charles Johnson. Some people think the name might come from "Joli Rouge," which means "Pretty Red" in French. However, historians say there is no proof for that idea. The skull and crossbones design eventually became the standard look for pirates.
