Bislama is a special way of speaking used in the country of Vanuatu. It is a creole language, which means it grew from different languages to help people communicate.

While Vanuatu has 113 different local languages, Bislama acts as a bridge. It is the national language and one of three official languages. It is used in the national anthem, "Yumi, Yumi, Yumi." Many people living in cities like Port Vila speak it first. Others use it as a second language to talk with neighbors.

Most of the words in Bislama come from English. In fact, more than 95% of the words are English in origin. The rest of the words come from French or local languages. These local words are often names for plants and animals.

Even though the words are English, the grammar is very different. It uses an Oceanic style of grammar. For example, the word "long" can mean next to, at, or in. The word "blong" is used to show that something belongs to someone. You might say "buk blong mi" to mean "my book."

Bislama has a deep and difficult history. In the 1870s and 1880s, many people from the islands were taken to work on plantations.

These workers were often forced to work in places like Fiji or Australia. Because they spoke many different languages, they created a simple way to talk to each other. This early way of speaking was a pidgin. As people returned to their home islands, this way of speaking spread across Vanuatu. This same history helped create similar languages in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

There are many interesting facts about how Bislama works. The name Bislama likely comes from an old word for sea cucumber.

In the 1840s, people harvested sea cucumbers and sandalwood. The name of the language is linked to these trades. For a long time, Bislama was mostly a spoken language. The first dictionary was not published until 1977. Later, a new dictionary in 1995 helped people agree on how to spell words. Today, people use the Latin alphabet to write it down.

Learning Bislama shows how different cultures can mix together. You can see this in how people use words for things like computers. In the capital, someone might use the English word. In other places, they might use a French word.

Even the way people say "he" or "she" is the same in Bislama. This makes it a very useful tool for everyone. It helps locals and foreigners understand one another. It keeps the many people of Vanuatu connected every day.
