Ships use many different flags on the water.

One main type is the ensign. An ensign shows a ship's home country. Ships must fly them in foreign waters. They also fly them when entering a harbor.

Some groups use a distinctive mark. This is a special flag to help people tell ships apart. For example, ships in the NOAA fleet fly their own mark. This helps them look different from Navy ships.

Leaders also fly flags. These are called rank flags. A rank flag shows the level of a leader. In the past, leaders used flags to send orders. Now, these flags show which ship is the headquarters. They tell other ships to show respect.

Other flags have special jobs too. A pennant is a long, thin flag. A commissioning pennant shows a captain has power over the ship. Some ships even fly a church pennant during religious services.

There are also signal flags. These flags use shapes and colors to act like an alphabet. They help sailors talk to each other across the waves.
