Many people call it adlay or adlay millet. You might even see it sold in stores as Chinese pearl barley. However, it is not actually related to true barley. It is a special plant that grows well in high areas where rice or corn might struggle.

This plant works in two very different ways depending on the variety. The wild variety, known as Coix lacryma-jobi var. lacryma-jobi, grows hard shells. These shells are white, oval, and look like shiny pearls. They are actually called involucres, which are hardened bracts that cover the flowers. Because these shells have natural holes, people use them as beads for necklaces or prayer beads. The cultivated variety, var. ma-yuen, is different. It has a soft shell and is harvested as a cereal crop for food or traditional medicine.

People have been using this plant for a very long time. In China, remains from the Neolithic period show it was used to brew beer around 3000 BC. It was also found in Japan during the Early Jōmon Period. In India, remains have been found in sites dating to about 1000 BC. The name "Job's tears" comes from Arabic merchants in the Middle Ages. They named it after a story about a man named Job. They used the hard, pearly seeds to make prayer beads called misbaha.

There are several specific types of this grass. The var. puellarum is the smallest, with seeds only 4mm wide. The var. stenocarpa has long, cylindrical shells and is often used for ornaments. In China, farmers grow the crop in provinces like Fujian, Jiangsu, Hebei, and Liaoning. In Southeast Asia, different groups use the seeds in unique ways. For example, the Akha people sew beads onto headwear and jackets. In Borneo, tribes like the Kelabit and Murut use them for decoration.

If you have ever seen a bead necklace, you might recognize the look of these seeds. Some people even use them to make bead curtains or woven baskets. In Japan, children have used the seeds to make playthings. They string them together to make necklaces. The seeds are so useful that they have moved all over the world. They are now found in the southern United States and the New World tropics. It is amazing how one type of grass can be both a food and a beautiful decoration.
