There are two main types of this plant. One type is wild. It has very hard shells. These shells are white and look like pearls. They are shaped like ovals. People use these hard seeds as beads. They make necklaces and prayer beads. The seeds even have natural holes in them. This makes them easy to string together.

The other type is grown by farmers. This variety has a soft shell. People harvest it as a cereal crop. They use it for food and medicine. In some places, it is sold as Chinese pearl barley. However, it is not a real barley.

This plant has a long history. People in China used it a long time ago. They even used it to make beer. In Southeast Asia, many groups use the beads. Some people sew them onto jackets or bags. Others use them to make beautiful baskets.
