Sorghum

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Sorghum is a very important type of grass grown all over the world. It is the fifth most important cereal crop on Earth. People grow it for many different reasons. Some people eat the small grains for food. Farmers also use the whole plant to feed animals like cattle. Even the stalks can be used to make fuel called ethanol.

This plant is a survivor in tough places. It can grow in very hot and dry weather. It also handles poor soil and high altitudes quite well.

Growing sorghum works in a very clever way. The plant is very good at competing with weeds. It produces a special substance called sorgoleone to help it win. This helps the sorghum stay healthy even when weeds try to grow nearby.

Most sorghum is an annual plant, which means it lives for one season. Some special types are perennial, so they can live for many years. To grow well, the soil often needs to have rested for two years. This helps the plant get the nutrients it needs to thrive.

Humans have been using this grass for a very long time. It was first grown in Eastern Sudan more than 5,000 years ago. Archaeologists found evidence of it near the Atbara and Gash rivers.

There is even ancient sorghum bread in a museum in Italy. Long ago, the first type of sorghum had very tight husks. People had to pull the husks off by force. Later, new types grew larger grains that were much easier to harvest.

There are many different facts about how much sorghum we grow. In 2023, the whole world produced 57 million tonnes of it. The United States is the biggest producer, making up 14 percent of that total.

Other big producers include Mexico, Ethiopia, and India. China is the largest buyer, importing more than all other countries combined. The grain is very nutritious for people to eat. It is full of carbohydrates, protein, and many B vitamins.

You might recognize sorghum from things you eat every day. Since it has no gluten, it is great for special diets. You can eat it as porridge or even as flatbreads. Some people even pop it like popcorn, though the pieces are smaller than corn.

You can also find it in sweet syrups made from juice. This juice comes from sweet sorghum varieties that have a lot of sugar. It is amazing how one single grass can do so many different jobs.
