life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Zoysia is a group of creeping grasses. These plants grow in many places. You can find them across much of Asia and Australia. They also grow on various islands in the Pacific. These grasses often live in coastal areas or grasslands. Many people use them to make beautiful lawns.

These grasses work in a very special way. They can handle many different kinds of weather. They grow well with different amounts of sun and water. They can also handle many different temperatures. In places like southern Florida, they follow a seasonal pattern. They grow during the warm and wet summer months. Then they go dormant during the dry and cool winter months.

We know the name of this group from history. The genus is named after Karl von Zois. He was a botanist from Slovenia. He lived from the years 1756 to 1799. Another scientist named Carl Ludwig von Willdenow helped name it in 1801. He published this work in a book for a group in Berlin.

There are many different types of zoysia. One type is called Zoysia japonica. It grows in Japan, Korea, and China. Another type is Zoysia matrella. This one grows in Southeast Asia and New Guinea. Some people like a type called Emerald Zoysia. This is a hybrid between two other kinds. It comes from Z. japonica and Z. tenuifolia.

Zoysia is very helpful for many jobs. It is a popular choice for golf courses. People use it for fairways and teeing areas. The grass forms dense mats that stop erosion on slopes. This means it keeps the dirt from sliding away. It is also good at repelling weeds all year. It stays healthy because it resists disease and bugs.
