Zoysia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Zoysia is a large genus of creeping grasses. These plants are found across much of Asia and Australia. They also grow on various islands throughout the Pacific. You might find these species in coastal areas or open grasslands. Many people value zoysia because it makes for a very useful groundcover. It is a popular choice for creating lawns in many temperate climates.

These grasses are known for their unique growth habits and resilience. Zoysia can tolerate wide variations in temperature and sunlight. They also handle different amounts of water very well. In savanna climates, such as southern Florida, they follow a seasonal cycle. They grow actively during the warm and wet summer months. During the drier and cooler winter months, the grass becomes dormant. This ability to adapt helps them survive in many environments.

There are many different species within the zoysia genus. One common type is Zoysia japonica, which is found in Japan, Korea, and China. Another species, Zoysia matrella, grows in Southeast Asia and New Guinea. Some varieties have even naturalized in parts of Africa and the Americas. There are also specific hybrids created by scientists. For example, the cultivar Zoysia 'Emerald' is a hybrid. It comes from a cross between Z. japonica and Z. tenuifolia.

We can trace the history of this name back to the early 1800s. The genus is named after a Slovenian botanist named Karl von Zois. He lived from 1756 to 1799. In 1801, the scientist Carl Ludwig von Willdenow officially named the genus. He published this discovery in a work for the Gesellschaft Naturforschender Freunde zu Berlin. This scientific naming helped organize our understanding of these grasses.

Zoysia offers many practical benefits for land management. These grasses are excellent at stopping erosion on slopes. They do this by forming dense mats of growth. They can even grow into mounds that cover low features. This dense growth also helps the grass repel weeds throughout the year. Because they form such thick mats, they are very effective at holding soil in place.

Many industries rely on the specific qualities of zoysia. It is a very popular choice for golf courses. Professionals use it to create fairways and teeing areas. People like it because it has a fine texture and a soft feel. It also has a low growth habit, which is helpful for maintenance. Zoysia is known to resist disease and hold up well under heavy traffic. It is often less vulnerable to insect or fungus damage than St. Augustine grass.

Maintaining zoysia requires specific care to keep it looking its best. Turf experts often recommend using reel blade mowers for this grass. This type of mowing helps maintain its neat appearance. Depending on the environment, zoysia may require less fertilization than other grasses. Some types are even available commercially as sod in certain areas. This makes it easier for people to plant large, healthy lawns quickly.
