Cynodon

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Cynodon is a group of plants in the grass family. People often call these plants Bermuda grass or dog's tooth grass.

The name comes from two Greek words. One word means dog and the other means tooth. These grasses are very important for many lands. They grow well in warm temperate and tropical regions. Many of these plants started in the Old World. Now they grow in the New World and on many islands.

These grasses have a special way of spreading. They use rhizomes and stolons to grow. Rhizomes are stems that grow under the soil. Stolons are stems that grow along the top of the ground.

Because of these stems, the grass can spread fast. If you try to pull it out, the stems break. These broken pieces then grow back into new plants. This can make the grass act like a weed in flower beds. It can be hard to kill with herbicides.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. In 1805, Louis Claude Marie in Persoon wrote about them. This was in a book called Synopsis Plantarum.

Many species used to be in this group. Now, some belong to other groups like Poa or Digitaria. This happens when scientists find a better place for them. They use names like Arundo or Chloris for those plants. Taxonomy helps us group living things correctly.

There are many different types of Cynodon. For example, Cynodon dactylon grows in the Old World. It was moved to the New World and many islands.

Another type, Cynodon nlemfuensis, grows from Ethiopia to Zimbabwe. It is also in Texas, Florida, and South America. Cynodon plectostachyus grows in Chad and East Africa. It can also be found in Mexico and California. Each species lives in its own special place.

Many people see this grass every day. It is used for lawns in warm areas like the Sunbelt in the USA.

This grass has drought tolerance. This means it can live even when there is very little water. People use it on golf courses and sports fields. It is used for football and baseball fields too. However, a hybrid called Tifton 85 caused a problem in Texas. It produced cyanide and killed a herd of cattle.
