Cynodon

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Cynodon is a group of plants in the grass family. People often call these plants Bermuda grass. They also call them dog's tooth grass. This name comes from old Greek words.

These grasses grow in warm places. They live in tropical lands and warm temperate areas. Many of them grew in the Old World first. Now they grow in the New World and on islands too. Some species grow in China and India. Others grow in Africa or South America.

Many people grow these grasses for lawns. They are used on golf courses and sports fields. One type is very good for dry areas. It has drought tolerance. This means it can live even when there is little water.

This grass can spread very fast. It uses rhizomes and stolons to grow. Rhizomes are stems that grow under the ground. Stolons are stems that grow along the top of the ground. These parts break easily if you pull them. Then they just grow back again. This can make the grass act like a weed in flower beds. It can be hard to kill with herbicides. Herbicides are tools used to stop unwanted plants from growing.
