Octodon is a group of small rodents. Most live in the Andes mountains. They live in Chile and Argentina. Their name comes from Greek words. These words mean "eight tooth." This is because their teeth look like the number eight.

The most famous member is the common degu. Some degus are nocturnal. This means they are awake at night. Other degus are active during the day. They live in groups in tunnels. These tunnels are called burrows.

Degus are herbivores. This means they eat plants. They eat leaves and other greens. Sometimes food is hard to find. Then they eat their own droppings. This helps them get more nutrition. A part of their gut called the cecum helps digest tough plants.

Degus have gray fur. Their bellies are creamy yellow. They have large ears. Their legs help them jump. They have pads on their paws to stop slipping. Some species are in trouble. The Pacific degu is critically endangered. This means it is at high risk of disappearing.
