The name Jhansi might mean "covered in bushes or undergrowth." This name fits because the area was once covered in thick forest.

Long ago, the city began to grow around a hilltop fort. The Orchha raja, Bir Singh Deo, built this fort in 1613.

Before the fort was built, the land belonged to a village called Lahargird. Later, the city became a large town under Maratha rule. A governor named Naru Shankar helped the town grow very quickly. He built up the fort and brought people from other towns. He even helped people move to Jhansi from Orchha. Another leader, Madho Gobind Antia, built a large reservoir called Antia Tal.

Many different groups have ruled Jhansi throughout its long history. The Mughal Empire controlled the area for a long time. Later, the Maratha Empire took control of the region. In 1773, there were battles against forces from the Nawab of Awadh. Eventually, the British took control of the Jhansi State in 1854. This happened because the British did not recognize the adopted heir of the last ruler. At that time, the town had about 40,000 people living there. It was a busy place for trading goods like grain and cotton.

One of the most famous leaders was Rani Lakshmi Bai.

She was the wife of the last ruler, Gangadhar Rao. In 1857, a big fight for independence broke out in the city. Lakshmi Bai became a leader for the rebels in Jhansi. She set up her own administration and even started a mint. She raised an army and made the forts at Jhansi and Karahra much stronger. She fought to protect her land from the British and other groups. Her leadership remains a very important part of the city's story.

Today, Jhansi is a modern and growing city in India. It is a major hub for travel by road and rail.

The city was named one of the cleanest in Uttar Pradesh in 2018. New projects are happening to help the city grow even more. The government is working to build a new airport there. They are also developing a special defence corridor to boost the economy. This helps the city connect to big paths like the north-south corridor. Jhansi continues to be an important center for the whole region.
