Jewish music is a collection of melodies and traditions from the Jewish people. It includes religious music used for prayer and secular music used for celebrations. People value these sounds because they connect them to their history and faith. Some music comes from very old times, like the biblical period. Other styles grew as Jewish communities moved to new lands. This movement helped create many different rhythms and sounds.

In the ancient Temple in Jerusalem, music was a big part of life. A regular orchestra used twelve instruments and a choir of twelve male singers. They played the kinnor, which is a lyre, and the nevel, a type of harp. They also used the tof, or tambourine, and the shofar, a ram's horn. Other instruments included the chalil, alamoth, and uggav pipes. They even used a copper cymbal called a tziltzal.

After the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD, music moved to the synagogue. In these services, the music is mostly just voices. A leader called a cantor, or hazzan, leads the singing. The congregation responds in different ways. Sometimes they sing a refrain, or a repeating part. Other times, the cantor and the people sing different verses back and forth. This tradition helps people pray together as one group.

Jewish music has many special names for its different songs. Piyyutim are liturgical poems used in services. Pizmonim are songs that praise God, often used by Sephardic Jews. In the Middle East, some groups sing baqashot from midnight until dawn. There are also nigunim, which are wordless tunes used in the Hassidic movement. These songs help people feel a deep connection through melody alone.

Secular music is often made for dancing and happy events. Klezmer is a famous style of dance music for weddings. It was developed by Ashkenazi Jews in Eastern Europe around the 15th century. These musicians, called klezmerim, often play songs in Yiddish. Sephardic music also has its own unique style. It was born in medieval Spain and carries influences from many places.
