Klezmer is a lively instrumental music tradition.

It belongs to the Ashkenazi Jews of Central and Eastern Europe. People played these tunes at weddings and social gatherings. The music is meant for both dancing and listening. It can be fast and happy or slow and serious. Many different musical styles blend together in klezmer. It uses sounds from Ottoman, Greek, and Romanian music. It also includes German and Slavic folk dances.

Musicians use special ways to play their instruments. They try to make instruments sound like a human voice. Some notes mimic a person laughing or crying. One way is called a krekhts, which sounds like a groan. Another way is called a glitshn, which is a slide. Musicians also use trills and grace notes to add detail. These ornaments are not random at all. They show the skill and taste of the player.

The history of klezmer is very long and interesting. The word comes from Yiddish words for musical instruments. In the sixteenth century, it began to describe the musicians themselves. These musicians often belonged to professional groups called guilds. In the 1910s and 1920s, musicians brought the music to the United States. Famous players like Dave Tarras and Naftule Brandwein helped it grow there. Later, American musicians like Max Epstein and Ray Musiker followed them.

Klezmer has many different types of dances. Some people dance in a big circle. A popular dance is the Bulgar, which has a catchy rhythm. Another dance is the Sher, where couples move and trade places. There are also ritual dances like the mitzvah dance. These are often performed at weddings with a handkerchief or belt. Some dances, like the Hora, come from Romanian music. Other dances, such as the Kolomeike, come from Ukraine.

The music has changed a lot over the years. When it arrived in America, it picked up sounds from big band music. After the Holocaust, the popularity of klezmer went down for a while. However, a Klezmer Revival began in the late 1970s. This brought new life to the tradition in many places. Musicians now experiment by mixing klezmer with jazz or even punk music. This shows how the music can always find new ways to grow.
