This music can be very traditional or it can be new. Traditional folk music often comes from a community's shared history and customs. It helps people feel connected to their culture or their nation. For immigrant groups, these songs help them remember where their families came from.

Some people even call these styles world music or roots music. It is a living way to keep a way of life alive.

Learning folk music is a very hands-on experience. For a long time, most people learned songs by memory. This is called an oral tradition.

Because they did not use books, they learned by ear. Singers would listen and then pass the song to others. This process allows the music to change slightly over many years. These small changes are part of the folk process. Performers might also make up their own musical arrangements on the spot. They do not always use written sheet music like classical players do.

History shows us that folk music has always been part of daily life. Long ago, people used singing to help them during manual labor.

Singing helped workers keep a steady rhythm while planting or weaving. It also helped make repetitive tasks feel less boring. In their free time, people used music to tell stories and entertain. The term "folklore" was actually created in 1846 by William Thoms. He used it to describe the customs of the people. Before that, German thinkers used the word "Volk" to mean the people as a whole.

There are many different kinds of folk music to explore. Traditional music often includes songs about heroes like Robin Hood or John Henry.

Many tunes follow a simple AABB structure, which is also called binary form. Some musicians even string many tunes together into a medley. This music is not just about the notes on a page. It is about the people who sing and dance together. Whether it is a wedding or a religious festival, the music brings people together. It turns simple sounds into a shared memory for everyone.
