Two groups fought for control of the land. One group was the Imamate. They were led by an elected leader named Ghalib al-Hinai. The other group was the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman. It was led by Sultan Said bin Taimur.

The fight was about power and oil. Big oil companies wanted to find oil in the interior lands. These companies gave money to the Sultan to help him. The British government also helped the Sultan. They wanted to make sure they could reach the oil wells.

The Imamate tried to protect their land from the Sultan. They did not want foreign groups to have power there. The war lasted from 1954 to 1959. In 1959, the British used planes and troops to fight. This helped the Sultan win the war.

Later, the United Nations spoke about Oman. They said the British should stop their actions. They said the Omani people should be able to choose their own way. This was a big change for the country.
