The war started after a leader named Hamad died. His nephew, Khalid, took over the palace. But the British did not want Khalid to be the new sultan. An old rule said the British must agree to a new leader. Khalid did not get their permission.

The British sent a final warning to Khalid. They told him to leave the palace. Khalid did not listen. He stayed inside with his guards.

The palace caught on fire. The fight was very fast. It lasted between 38 and 45 minutes. This is the shortest war in history. About 500 people in Zanzibar were hurt or killed. Only one British sailor was hurt. After the war, the British put a new leader in power. This meant the British had much more control over the islands.
