Before this, a man named Charles Gordon was the governor. He tried to stop the slave trade. This made some local traders angry. After the Mahdi took control, the war grew. He fought neighbors like Ethiopia. Later, forces from Britain and Egypt came back. They fought the Mahdist army at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. The Mahdist state fell after this defeat.
