Long ago, life there was very hard. The ruler was Sultan Said bin Taimur. He kept the country very quiet and did not allow much change. This made many people angry.

In 1965, a group called the Dhofar Liberation Front started a fight. They wanted to rule themselves. They also wanted the British to leave.

The group became more radical over time. They began to follow ideas called Marxism-Leninism. They wanted to help all people in the area. The rebels grew strong. They got money and weapons from South Yemen and China. They even opened schools for girls.

In 1970, things changed. The Sultan's son, Qaboos bin Said, took over the throne.
