It grew very large in the 18th and 19th centuries. Omani ships sailed the Indian Ocean to trade goods. They traded things like ivory, spices, and coffee. The empire even reached parts of Africa and Asia.

One ruling family, the Ya'rubids, built a strong state. A leader named Saif bin Sultan helped the land grow. He brought water to dry areas. He also helped people plant date palms near the coast.

Later, the empire made friends with other nations. In 1798, Oman and Great Britain made a trade treaty. In 1833, Oman signed a treaty with the United States. A ship called the Al-Sultanah even visited New York in 1840. It carried gifts like rugs and spices for the President.

A leader named Said bin Sultan moved the capital to Zanzibar. Zanzibar is an island in Africa. This helped the empire manage its African lands. After Said died in 1856, the empire was split in two. One part stayed in Oman. The other part ruled from Zanzibar.
