Before he became leader, he had a fight with his brother. His brother was the Imam, or leader, of Oman. After his brother died, Saif became the new leader. He lived in the Rustaq castle. He even added a wind tower to the castle.

Saif helped his people grow food. He built aflaj to move water to plants. He also planted many date palms. This helped people move to the coast. He built new schools too.

Saif also fought for more land. He fought the Portuguese in East Africa. His forces took islands like Pemba and Zanzibar. He sent Arab leaders to rule those places. He also used ships to raid merchant trade.

Saif died in 1711. He was very wealthy when he died. He had 28 ships and many date trees. People called him "the chain of the Earth." They gave him this name because he helped his people so much.
