Jane Luu is an astronomer who studies space. She was born in Vietnam. In 1975, she moved to the United States. She worked very hard in school. She earned a scholarship to Stanford University.

Jane used a large telescope to look at the sky. She wanted to find links between asteroids and comets. In 1992, she and David Jewitt found something new. They found the Kuiper Belt. This is a ring of objects far past the planets. They found a small object there. They nicknamed it "Smiley."
