The Kuiper belt is a large ring of objects.

It sits far from the Sun. It starts past the planet Neptune. This belt is much bigger than the asteroid belt. It is 20 times wider. It is also much heavier.

Most objects here are made of frozen gases. These are called ices. They include methane, ammonia, and water. Many dwarf planets live here. A dwarf planet is a small world that is not a full planet. Pluto is the largest dwarf planet in the belt. Other dwarf planets include Haumea and Makemake.

Scientists named the belt after Gerard Kuiper. He was an astronomer who studied space. In 1992, people found the first new object there. This was called Albion. Since then, we have found thousands of objects. These objects are called trans-Neptunian objects, or TNOs. This name means they are beyond Neptune. Some moons, like Triton, may have come from this cold region.
