Hills cloud

A giant cloud of icy rocks may hide far away.

Scientists call this the Hills cloud. It is a theoretical disc of objects. This means it is an idea that scientists think might be true. It sits inside the Oort cloud. The Hills cloud might have five times as many comets as the Oort cloud.

This cloud helps solve a big puzzle. Comets in the Oort cloud are often disturbed. Some leave our Solar System. Others fall into the Sun or hit giant planets. Without new comets, the Oort cloud would be empty. The Hills cloud acts like a supply. It sends new comets to the outer cloud.

Most objects in the cloud are made of ice. They contain water, methane, and ammonia. Some might even be rocky. The cloud may have formed long ago. This may have happened when a star passed near our Sun. Some famous comets might come from this place. Comet McNaught is one example. These icy travelers come from very far away.
