A giant cloud of ice sits far from the Sun.

This is the Oort cloud. It is a huge group of icy objects. Scientists think it has billions of pieces of ice. These pieces can become long-period comets. A long-period comet is a comet with a very large orbit.

The cloud has two main parts. One part is a flat disc. We call this the Hills cloud. The other part is a big sphere. This sphere surrounds the whole Solar System. The cloud is very far away. It is even past the heliosphere, which is the bubble of space around our Sun.

How did it get there? Most scientists think these icy bits formed near the Sun. Then, giant planets like Jupiter used gravity to push them away. This scattered them into deep space. Now, the gravity of passing stars can nudge these bits. This can send a comet flying toward our Sun. The cloud helps keep a steady number of comets in our space. Without it, comets would be lost or destroyed by the Sun.
