He spent his life studying the stars. He helped us learn how the Milky Way works. Before his work, people thought the Sun was at the center. Oort showed this was not true. He found that our galaxy rotates.

He saw that stars move at different speeds. Stars near the center move much faster. Stars far away move more slowly. This is called differential rotation. This means the galaxy does not spin like a solid disk. It spins more like a spinning toy wheel. Oort also studied comets. He realized they live in a much larger area than the planets. This led to the idea of the Oort cloud. He also found a group of stars called the galactic halo. This group orbits outside the main disk of our galaxy. He even helped start the field of radio astronomy. This is a way to study space using radio waves. His work changed how we see the universe.
