Jan Hendrik Oort was a famous Dutch astronomer.

He was a pioneer who changed how we see the universe. Many people called him one of the greatest astronomers of the 20th century. He helped us understand the Milky Way galaxy much better. His work even helped start a new field called radio astronomy. This is a way to study space using radio waves. He was truly one of the most important explorers of the stars.

Oort discovered that our galaxy is always moving. Before his work, people thought the Sun was at the center. He showed that the Milky Way actually rotates. He found that stars move at different speeds depending on where they are. Stars near the center move much faster than those far away. This is called differential rotation. He said the galaxy spins like a giant Catherine Wheel.

Oort was born in a small town called Franeker.

His birth was on April 28, 1900. His father was a medical director in a small forest. Oort went to school in Leiden and then studied physics at Groningen University. He chose astronomy because his teacher, Jacobus Cornelius Kapteyn, was very inspiring. In 1922, he even went to the United States to study at Yale. He later returned to the Netherlands to work at Leiden University.

He made many big discoveries during his long career. In 1932, he wrote that there must be invisible matter in space. A scientist named Fritz Zwicky later called this dark matter. Today, we think dark matter makes up about 84.5% of the universe. Oort also found the galactic halo, which is a group of stars outside the main disk. He realized comets live in a huge area called the Oort cloud. Many things are named after him, like the asteroid 1691 Oort.

Oort's life was also shaped by big events on Earth. During World War II, Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands. Oort did not want to work with the occupiers. He moved his family to a quiet village called Hulshorst to stay safe. While there, he continued to write about the stars. Even during hard times, he never stopped being a scientist. His discoveries still help us understand the stars today.
