Zhang Yuzhe was a famous astronomer from China. Many people call him the father of modern Chinese astronomy. He was born in 1902 in Fuzhou. Zhang went to Tsinghua University. Later, he studied in the United States. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1929.

Zhang spent his life looking at the sky. He studied asteroids, which are small space rocks. He also looked at variable stars. These are stars that change in brightness. Zhang found three new comets. He also found a minor planet. This rock is called 3789 Zhongguo.

Zhang led the Purple Mountain Observatory for many years. He was the director there from 1950 to 1984. He studied how comets and asteroids move in space. This is called calculating an orbit. An orbit is the path an object takes around a star or planet. His work was very important. Today, a crater on the moon bears his name. An asteroid is also named after him.
