Walter Baade was a German astronomer. He studied the stars and space. He found ten asteroids. Asteroids are rocky objects that move around the sun. One was named Hidalgo.

Baade worked in Germany and the United States. During a war, the sky became very dark. This happened because of blackouts. The dark sky helped him see better. He looked at the Andromeda Galaxy. He saw stars in the center of that galaxy. He found two groups of stars. He also found two types of Cepheid variable stars. These are stars that change in brightness.

Baade used these stars to measure space. He found the universe is much bigger than we thought. His math doubled the size of the known universe. He also worked with Fritz Zwicky. They found supernovae. Supernovae are huge star explosions. They also thought these explosions might make neutron stars.

Many things are named after him. There is a crater on the Moon named Baade. One of the big Magellan telescopes is also named after him.
