Walter Baade was a famous German astronomer. He spent his life studying the stars and space. He was born in Germany in 1893. He studied math and physics at two different universities. Later, he moved to work in the United States. He worked at the Mount Wilson Observatory in California for many years. His work helped us understand how big our universe really is.

Baade discovered many things by looking through telescopes. He found ten different asteroids. One was named Hidalgo, which is a special kind of object called a Centaur. He also found the asteroid Icarus. During World War II, the sky became very dark due to blackouts. This darkness helped him see stars in the Andromeda Galaxy better than before. He saw that stars belong to two different groups. He called these Population I and Population II stars.

He also studied stars that change in brightness. These are called Cepheid variable stars. Baade found there are actually two different types of these stars. This was a very important discovery. He used this fact to recalculate how large the universe is. His new math showed the universe was twice as big as Edwin Hubble thought. He shared this news at a big meeting in Rome in 1952.

Baade worked with another scientist named Fritz Zwicky. Together, they identified supernovae. A supernova is a huge explosion of a star. They also suggested that these explosions might create neutron stars. Later, Baade and Rudolph Minkowski identified radio sources in space. This helped scientists connect radio signals to objects we can see. He was a very busy and successful scientist.

Many things in space are named to honor him. There is a crater on the Moon named Baade. There is also a valley on the Moon called Vallis Baade. One of the large Magellan telescopes is named after him too. An asteroid named 1501 Baade also carries his name. He received many awards, like the Bruce Medal. He died in Germany in 1960.
