He was a writer, a cartoonist, and a playwright. He became very famous for his work in a magazine called The New Yorker. His funny drawings were so popular that the magazine decided to start printing them. He also wrote many books about his own life and funny stories. People loved his ability to see the humor in the world around them. He turned his observations into art that people still enjoy today.

Thurber's way of working often combined writing with drawing.

For example, he wrote a book called Is Sex Necessary? with E. B. White. This book was a parody, which is a way of making fun of serious things. It included many of his own drawings to help tell the jokes. He also wrote a famous collection of stories called My Life and Hard Times. These stories were about growing up in Columbus, Ohio. He used his memory and his sense of humor to bring his childhood to life.

His journey began in Columbus, Ohio, where he was born on December 8, 1894.
