Palance's life began with a series of diverse and physically demanding roles. He was born Volodymyr Palahniuk on February 18, 1919, in Lattimer Mines, Pennsylvania. Some sources say he won 15 consecutive club fights, including 12 knockouts.

During World War II, Palance served in the United States Army Air Forces. He trained to become a pilot for the B-24 Liberator bomber. In 1943, he was involved in a plane crash that caused head injuries and burns. This accident required him to undergo reconstructive surgery. The surgery contributed to the distinctively gaunt facial appearance seen in his later films. After the war, he attended Stanford University. He originally studied journalism but later switched his focus to drama.

Palance transitioned from stage to screen through rigorous training. In New York City, he studied method acting under Michael Chekhov. He made his Broadway debut in 1947 in the play The Big Two. His major break came when he served as an understudy for Marlon Brando. He eventually replaced Brando as Stanley Kowalski in the production of A Streetcar Named Desire. He made his film debut in 1950 in the movie Panic in the Streets.

He chose the name Jack Palance because people struggled to pronounce his birth name.

His film career saw rapid success in the early 1950s. In 1952, he received an Oscar nomination for the thriller Sudden Fear. He was nominated again in 1953 for his role in the Western Shane. During this era, he played various roles, including Attila the Hun in Sign of the Pagan. He also won an Emmy Award in 1957 for the teleplay Requiem for a Heavyweight. Palance's ability to play both supporting and leading roles made him a versatile talent.

Palance spent much of the late 1950s and 1960s working in Europe. He appeared in several international productions, such as the French film Le Mépris in 1963.

His later years were marked by high-profile roles in major blockbusters. He played villains in the films Young Guns and Tango & Cash. This period culminated in his award-winning performance as Curly in City Slickers. Beyond acting, Palance remained connected to his heritage.
